Syrian President Assad Resigns, Leaves Country Amid Negotiated Peaceful Power Handover

Bashar al-Assad steps down as Syrian President, departing the country following negotiations for a peaceful transition of power. Russia confirms his exit but denies involvement in the talks.

Moscow, Dec 8 — In a surprise turn of events, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and left the country, paving the way for a peaceful transition of power after years of conflict. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the development on Sunday, stating that Assad’s decision followed negotiations with various parties involved in Syria's protracted armed conflict.

"President Assad decided to resign from the presidency and has left the country, giving instructions for a peaceful transfer of power," the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. However, the ministry did not disclose Assad’s current whereabouts or provide details about the parties involved in the discussions.

Russia, a key ally of the Assad regime throughout the Syrian civil war, clarified that it did not participate in the negotiations leading to his resignation. "The Russian Federation did not take part in these discussions," the ministry said.

Moscow’s Stance on Syria’s Stability

The unexpected development has left Russia deeply concerned about the potential for renewed violence in Syria. Moscow called on all parties to prioritize political dialogue and avoid escalation.

"We urge all parties involved to refrain from violence and to resolve issues of governance through political means," the ministry’s statement emphasized.

Russia also confirmed that its military bases in Syria had been placed on high alert as a precautionary measure. Despite the heightened alert status, the ministry assured that there was no immediate threat to its forces stationed in the region.

The Path Ahead for Syria

Assad’s departure marks a pivotal moment for Syria, a country devastated by over a decade of civil war. With his exit, the focus shifts to how the peaceful transfer of power will be implemented and whether it will bring stability to a nation fractured by conflict.

Russia stated it is maintaining contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition as the situation unfolds. The peaceful resolution of power is seen as critical to rebuilding the war-torn country, but challenges remain as various factions vie for influence.

While Assad’s resignation may signal the end of his presidency, the next chapter in Syria’s history remains uncertain, as international and domestic actors navigate the delicate process of political transition.
